The .org was designed for organizations — specifically, non-profit organizations. And for a long time, that's exactly what it was. Wikipedia lives here. The EFF lives here. Your local community garden probably lives here too.

There's something reassuring about a .org address. It says "we're not here to sell you anything" (even though, let's be real, some of them are). It's the internet's equivalent of a nonprofit's letterhead.

In recent years, .org has become a battleground for internet governance. When the .org registry was almost sold to a private equity firm, the internet collectively lost its mind. And rightfully so — .org belongs to the community.
